Outreach and Education
As part of the Puerto Rico chapter of USLA’s educational efforts, chapter members participated in the 5th Beachboy SUP Race, held at the Villa Cofresí Hotel in Rincón on Saturday, April 13, 2013. The event was attended by hundreds of people. The chapter took the opportunity to teach the general public how to identify riptides, the importance of checking marine conditions before going to the beach, and how others might join the chapter as a member.
Trainings and Certifications
The first National Parks Company Lifeguard Assembly took place in the Añasco Vacation Center during April 8-12, 2013. The United States Lifesaving Association’s standards were used for preparing the trainings and tests administered. A second assembly was offered, from April 22 through 26, 2013, in Humacao. Both assemblies were attended by lifeguards from the National Parks Company and Escambrón Beach in San Juan, as well as independent lifeguards.
Surf Lifesaving Workshop
During April, 2012, two surf lifesaving workshops were offered. The locations used for these workshops were the Añasco Vacation Center, the swimming pool at the University of Puerto Rico’s Natatorium, and Sandy Beach at Rincón. Approximately 20 lifeguards participated in these events. The participants had the opportunity of learning different rescue techniques, practicing in scenarios designed by the workshop instructors.
